Browser-based tools solve a narrower but far more common problem: quick, single-purpose media tasks that do not justify installing anything. Why Browser-Based Tools Exist

What Browser Tools Are Not Good At

- Very large files on slow connections. Anything that must upload to a server for processing will be bottlenecked by your upload speed, not the tool itself. Prefer tools that process locally via WebAssembly for large files where privacy and speed both matter.
- Batch processing hundreds of files. Command-line ffmpeg with a shell loop will always outperform a browser tab for bulk jobs.
A Sensible Workflow
- Shoot or generate the source material at the highest quality you reasonably can — it is always easier to compress down later than to add quality back.

- Trim and convert format in-browser for quick jobs; reserve a desktop editor for anything with multiple tracks or transitions.
- Compress last, and compress to the platform’s actual spec rather than guessing — oversized files get silently re-compressed by the platform anyway, often worse than if you had done it yourself.
Checking a Tool Is Trustworthy
Before relying on any browser-based media tool, check three things: whether it requires an account (a genuine local-processing tool usually does not need one), whether it discloses if files are uploaded to a server, and whether it works with your browser’s network tab open showing no outbound requests for the file itself during processing. For anything sensitive — unpublished work, client material, personal footage — that check takes thirty seconds and avoids a file ending up somewhere you did not intend.
