Pins Are Not Always What They Look Like

A Pinterest pin can be a still image, an animated GIF, a Video Pin, or an Idea Pin made of several pages. The right-click "Save image as" that works on a static pin returns a thumbnail on a Video Pin and nothing useful on an Idea Pin. This tool resolves the pin URL to the underlying media file — the full-resolution JPEG or PNG for image pins, the MP4 for video pins — so what you save matches what you saw.

Image pins usually store at up to 1200px on the long edge for older uploads and considerably larger for recent ones; Pinterest keeps several sizes and the tool asks for the largest. Video Pins come back as MP4, most often 9:16 at 1080x1920.

What This Is Useful For

• Mood boards and design references. Designers and interior stylists routinely need a local folder of reference imagery to drop into a client deck or a Figma board rather than a list of links that rot.
• Your own pins. Brands and shops that have pinned hundreds of product images over the years often no longer have the source files in-house. The stored pin is the surviving copy.
• Recipe, pattern and tutorial pins saved for offline use when you are cooking, sewing, or building without a signal.
• Repurposing your own Video Pins to Reels or Shorts, since Pinterest offers no export.

Reference Use Versus Republishing

This distinction matters more on Pinterest than almost anywhere else, because the whole platform is built on resharing other people's images. Saving a pin to your own machine as a design reference is broadly the same act as saving it to a secret board — the image is still someone's work, and you are still not licensed to publish it. Using that same image in a client presentation, on your website, or in a printed piece requires permission or a licence from whoever owns it, and the fact that it was freely visible on Pinterest grants you nothing. Many pins also lead back to stock libraries where the visible image is a watermark-free preview of a paid asset.

The safe habit: keep saved pins in a personal reference folder, trace anything you intend to publish back to its origin, and licence it properly there.

Why a Pin Might Not Resolve

Secret boards and pins on private profiles are not publicly served and cannot be read.

Idea Pins are multi-page and interactive; some pages carry stickers and music layers rendered client-side, so a saved file may not include every overlay you see in the app.

Shortened links from the mobile share sheet (pin.it/xxxx) usually redirect correctly, but if one fails, open it in a browser first and copy the expanded pinterest.com/pin/... address.

Deleted or spam-removed pins stop being served immediately.
