Facebook Video, and Why It Is Hard to Get Back

Facebook stores video across several product surfaces — feed posts, Watch, Reels, page videos, and group posts — and each has slightly different privacy handling. The one thing they share is the absence of a download option for anyone but the original uploader, and even the uploader's export arrives as a bulk archive rather than a single file on demand. This tool resolves a public Facebook video URL to its delivery file so you can save one specific video without downloading your entire account history.

Returned files are MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. Facebook typically serves two renditions, an SD copy around 640px wide and an HD copy at 720p or 1080p; the tool requests the highest available. Very old uploads may only have an SD rendition stored, which no tool can improve.

Getting the Right URL

• On desktop, click the video's timestamp to open its permalink, then copy from the address bar. URLs look like facebook.com/watch/?v=123456 or facebook.com/pagename/videos/123456.
• In the mobile app, tap the three dots on the post and choose "Copy link". The resulting fb.watch/xxxx short link works.
• Reels use facebook.com/reel/123456 and behave like Instagram Reels: vertical MP4, reliably retrievable when public.
• Group and private-page videos will not resolve. Neither will anything posted to Friends-only or Custom audiences.

Who Needs This

• Page and community managers keeping a local library of the videos their page has published, for reporting, reuse, or migration to another platform.
• Small businesses that had an agency post video to their page and never received the source files. The published copy is better than nothing.
• Families archiving their own uploads — a decade of birthday videos posted to Facebook and lost from the original phone is an extremely common situation.
• Creators repurposing a Facebook Reel into Shorts or TikTok without a screen recording.

Facebook's Own Export Is Sometimes the Better Answer

If you want everything you have ever uploaded rather than one video, use Settings > Your Facebook Information > Download Your Information, select Posts and Videos, and choose High media quality. It takes hours to prepare and arrives as a large zip, but it is complete, it includes originals at the quality Facebook stored, and it is unambiguously permitted. Use this tool for the single-video case; use the official export for a full backup.

Failure Cases Explained

"Private or unavailable" means the audience setting excludes logged-out viewers. Test by opening the link in a private browser window.

Live videos cannot be captured while streaming. Wait until the broadcast ends and Facebook has published the replay.

Cross-posted content — a video shared from another page may resolve to the original page's permalink; use that URL instead.

Rate limiting shows up as intermittent failures on links that worked minutes earlier. Retry rather than assuming the video is gone.

Responsible Use

Save your own uploads, your organisation's page content, or public-domain and permission-cleared material. Downloading someone else's family video, a news outlet's footage, or licensed entertainment content and reposting it is a copyright infringement and a breach of Facebook's terms. This tool accesses only publicly served media and does not bypass privacy controls, login walls, or DRM.
