Getting Video Off X/Twitter in Usable Quality

X has never shipped a download button. Video posted to the platform is transcoded into HLS segments for adaptive streaming, which is why the usual "save as" tricks return either nothing or a fragment a few seconds long. This tool resolves the manifest, picks the highest bitrate rendition the post offers, and hands you a single stitched MP4 instead of a folder of .ts chunks.

Expect up to 1920x1200 for uploads made at that size, H.264 video, AAC audio. X caps uploads for standard accounts at 2 minutes 20 seconds and 512 MB, so most retrieved files are small. Longer uploads from verified accounts work the same way but take longer to assemble.

Which Links Work

• A direct status URL — x.com/username/status/123456789 — is what the tool expects. The older twitter.com domain resolves identically.
• Quote tweets carry their own status ID; use the URL of the post that actually contains the video, not the one quoting it.
• Threads: each post in a thread has a separate status ID. Copy the link from the specific post.
• GIFs on X are not GIFs. They are silent looping MP4s, and that is what comes back.
• Spaces recordings, Broadcasts, and embedded YouTube or Twitch players are not X-hosted video and cannot be resolved here.

Legitimate Reasons to Save a Post's Video

• Your own archive. X's export gives you text and metadata, not usable media files. If your account carries years of video, saving the ones that matter is the only durable backup.
• Journalism and research. Posts are deleted constantly. Researchers documenting a public event routinely need the primary artefact, timestamped and stored, before it disappears.
• Community management. Saving a customer's video complaint or a viral mention so it can go into an internal report without linking to a post that may vanish.
• Repurposing. A clip that performed on X often performs on LinkedIn or Shorts, and native re-upload beats a link every time.

Why Some Posts Refuse

Protected accounts serve nothing to logged-out requests, and the tool holds no session — this is by design, not a bug to route around.

Age-restricted and sensitive-media posts sit behind an interstitial that requires an authenticated, age-confirmed account.

Rate limiting. X aggressively throttles unauthenticated reads. A failure followed by a successful retry a minute later is almost always throttling rather than a missing file.

Deleted or suspended. Once a post or its author is removed, the media is unreachable from anywhere.

The retweet button gives you a licensed way to spread someone else's video inside X. Downloading it and re-uploading it as your own content is a different act with different consequences: it strips attribution, it breaks the original creator's metrics, and it is straightforwardly infringing unless you have permission. Fair dealing and fair use may cover short excerpts for criticism, commentary, or news reporting depending on your jurisdiction, but that is a judgement call about your specific use, not a blanket permission. When in doubt, quote the post instead of reposting the file.
