Which thumbnail size should you use?
YouTube generates a fixed set of still images for every upload and serves them from its image host. The largest, maxresdefault, is a 1280 × 720 copy of the custom thumbnail the creator uploaded. It only exists when the channel was eligible to upload a custom image and the source file was large enough; older videos and some Shorts stop at the 640 × 480 standard-definition frame. If the max-resolution tile above looks like a grey placeholder, that video simply has no maxres copy — use the standard-definition one instead.
For a blog post or a slide, the 480 × 360 high-quality image is usually plenty and loads faster. For a video review, a press kit, or anything printed, start from maxres. The medium 320 × 180 file is mainly useful for list views and link cards where a bigger image would be wasted bandwidth.
How this tool works
There is no scraping and no API call. YouTube's thumbnail URLs are predictable: once the eleven-character video ID is pulled out of your link, each size lives at a fixed address on i.ytimg.com. This page parses the ID in your browser, builds those addresses, and shows them to you. That is why results appear instantly and why the tool keeps working even when a video is age-gated for playback — the cover image is public either way.
The parser accepts standard watch links, youtu.be short links, Shorts URLs, embed URLs, live URLs, and a bare video ID. Playlist and channel links have no single thumbnail, so they are rejected with a message rather than a broken image.
Using someone else's thumbnail
A thumbnail is part of the creator's work. Saving one for reference, for a commentary piece, or for a review that credits the channel is normal editorial practice in most jurisdictions. Re-uploading it as the cover of your own video, or using it to imply an endorsement, is not. Why is the biggest image blurry? You are most likely looking at the standard-definition frame stretched by your browser. Open the file itself to check its real pixel size before using it.
Can I get a thumbnail from a private or unlisted video? Unlisted videos work, because their images are still served publicly. Private and deleted videos do not.
