How to Choose the Right Video Quality for Every Platform

Video quality settings are not a matter of taste — every major platform publishes (or reveals through testing) specific limits on resolution, aspect ratio, duration, bitrate and codec, and uploading outside those limits either gets your file rejected, re-encoded aggressively, or displayed with black bars and soft, blocky compression artefacts. This guide sets out the exact numbers per platform and the reasoning behind them, so you can export once, correctly, instead of guessing and re-uploading.
YouTube
- Resolution: 1080p (1920×1080) minimum recommended, up to 4K (3840×2160) or 8K for supported channels
- Aspect ratio: 16:9 for standard uploads, 9:16 for Shorts
- Codec/container: H.264 or H.265 inside MP4, or ProRes/DNxHR for the highest-fidelity uploads
- Frame rate: 24, 25, 30, 48 or 60fps — match your source footage rather than converting frame rates
- Bitrate: roughly 8 Mbps at 1080p/30fps, 12 Mbps at 1080p/60fps, and 35-45 Mbps at 4K/30fps for standard dynamic range
- Limits: up to 256GB or 12 hours per file, whichever comes first
YouTube re-encodes everything you upload regardless of the source, so there is little benefit to uploading beyond 1080p unless your content genuinely benefits from 4K detail (tutorials with fine on-screen text, nature or product footage). Instagram (Feed, Reels, Stories)
- Resolution: 1080×1920 for Reels and Stories (9:16 vertical); 1080×1080 (1:1) or 1080×1350 (4:5) for feed posts
- Codec: H.264, MP4 container, AAC audio
- Frame rate: 30fps standard
- Max duration: up to 90 seconds for Reels, 15 seconds per Story segment (longer videos are split automatically)
- Max file size: 4GB
Instagram's in-app compression is aggressive, so uploading at anything below 1080p guarantees a visibly soft final result — always upload the highest-quality 1080p export you have rather than a pre-compressed version.
TikTok
- Resolution: 1080×1920 (9:16) recommended; TikTok also accepts 1:1 and 16:9 but crops or letterboxes them in-feed
- Codec: H.264 or H.265, MP4 or MOV container
- Frame rate: 30fps (60fps supported on some devices)
- Max duration: up to 10 minutes for standard uploads
- Max file size: around 287MB on mobile upload, up to 500MB via the web uploader
Uploading through the TikTok web interface generally preserves more quality than the mobile app, since mobile uploads are more size-constrained and get compressed harder before they even leave the device.
Twitter / X
- Resolution: 1280×720 minimum, 1920×1080 recommended
- Aspect ratio: 16:9 or 1:1 display in-feed, though other ratios are accepted and cropped for the preview
- Codec: H.264, MP4 container
- Max duration: 2 minutes 20 seconds for standard accounts, longer for eligible verified/subscribed accounts
- Max file size: 512MB
- Resolution: 1080p minimum recommended
- Aspect ratio: supports both 16:9 and 9:16 — choose based on whether the audience is watching on mobile (vertical performs better) or desktop
- Codec: H.264, MP4 container
- Max duration: up to 240 minutes
- Max file size: up to 10GB
- Resolution: 1080p (1920×1080)
- Aspect ratio: 1:1 square performs best in-feed, 16:9 also supported
- Codec: MP4, H.264
- Max duration: up to 10 minutes

Why Bitrate Matters as Much as Resolution
Two files can share identical resolution and still look completely different if their bitrate — the amount of data allocated per second of video — differs. A 1080p file encoded at 2 Mbps will look noticeably worse than the same footage at 8 Mbps, because the lower bitrate forces the encoder to discard more detail, especially in fast motion or high-detail scenes. When exporting from an editor, set bitrate manually rather than trusting a generic "high quality" preset: aim for the platform figures listed above, and lean toward the higher end of the range for footage with a lot of motion or fine detail.
Codec Compatibility: Why H.264 Is Still the Safe Default
H.265 (HEVC) achieves similar quality at roughly half the file size of H.264, but not every platform decodes it consistently, and some browsers require licensing support that varies by device. H.264 remains the safest universal choice because every major platform accepts it without transcoding issues. If file size is a genuine constraint and your target platform explicitly supports H.265 (YouTube does), it is a reasonable choice; otherwise, default to H.264.
A Practical Export Checklist
- Identify the destination platform and its exact resolution, aspect ratio and duration limits before exporting.
- Keep your original high-resolution edit as the master file, and generate a separate export per platform rather than repurposing a compressed export.
- Match frame rate to your source footage rather than converting 24fps to 30fps or vice versa, which introduces judder.
- Set bitrate manually using the figures above rather than trusting an automatic "smallest file size" preset.
- Preview the export at 100% before uploading — compression artefacts are far easier to spot on a full-size preview than a scaled-down editor timeline.
General Rule When You Are Not Sure
When a platform's exact spec is unclear or you are exporting for multiple destinations at once, 1080p (1920×1080) MP4 with H.264 video, AAC audio, at 30fps is accepted cleanly almost everywhere and gives you a safe universal master to crop or re-encode from for any specific platform. Audio Quality Deserves the Same Attention
It is easy to focus entirely on video specs and forget that audio compression is subject to its own limits per platform. AAC at 128-192 kbps is a safe standard for social video across every platform listed above; dropping below 96 kbps introduces audible artefacts, particularly in music-heavy content, while going above 256 kbps rarely produces an audible improvement given the platform's own re-encoding on ingest. If your source audio was recorded at 48kHz (the standard for video production, as opposed to 44.1kHz used for music), export at 48kHz to avoid an unnecessary sample-rate conversion.
Vertical vs Horizontal: Choosing Before You Shoot
The biggest quality mistake many creators make happens before export entirely: shooting horizontally for a platform whose primary surface is vertical, or vice versa. A horizontal 16:9 clip cropped to 9:16 for Reels or TikTok loses roughly half its horizontal frame, which can cut subjects out of shot entirely.
