Bilibili's Format Is Genuinely Different

Bilibili is one of the largest video platforms in the world and almost nothing about it matches Western sites. Videos carry danmaku — comments that fly across the screen in real time — as a separate subtitle-like layer. A single "video" can contain multiple parts (P1, P2, P3) under one BV identifier. And playback is DASH-based, with video and audio stored as separate streams that a player combines. Saving a Bilibili video therefore means resolving the right part, fetching two streams, and muxing them.

This tool returns an MP4 with audio muxed in, at the highest publicly available rendition. Note that 1080p60, 4K, HDR and Dolby renditions are generally reserved for logged-in or premium accounts, so a public request typically returns 480p or 720p even when higher qualities exist. That is Bilibili's access tier, not a defect in the tool.

Understanding the URL

• bilibili.com/video/BV1xx411c7XX — the modern BV identifier. This is what to paste.
• ?p=2 on the end selects a specific part of a multi-part upload. Include it if you want that part.
• av123456 — the legacy AV identifier, still redirected.
• b23.tv/xxxx — the mobile share link, which redirects to the full URL.
• Bangumi, film and licensed anime pages are paid, DRM-protected content and are not accessible.

Latency, Geo-Blocking and Danmaku

Bilibili's CDN is optimised for mainland China. From Europe or North America, requests are slow and time out more often than on other platforms; a failure on the first attempt frequently succeeds on the second. Some content is region-locked outright and will never resolve from outside China. And the danmaku comment layer is not part of the video file — a saved MP4 will play clean, without the scrolling comments, because those are rendered by the player from a separate XML stream.

Responsible Use

Bilibili hosts a large volume of licensed anime, film and television that is protected and paid for. None of that is accessible here and attempting to obtain it is straightforward piracy. Use this tool for your own uploads, for openly licensed educational content, and for material you have permission to keep.
