Dailymotion, and Why People Still Use It

Dailymotion has been running since 2005 and remains one of the largest video platforms in Europe, with a substantial catalogue of news, sport, music and archival material that never made it to YouTube. Creators use it as a secondary home, publishers syndicate to it, and a lot of older internet video survives only there. What it does not have is any way to save a video you uploaded, which is where this tool fits.

The tool resolves a public Dailymotion video URL to its highest published rendition and returns an MP4. Dailymotion serves adaptive streams up to 1080p for most content and 4K where the uploader provided it; older uploads may top out at 480p because that is genuinely all that was stored.

Practical Uses

• Recovering your own uploads. Channels that migrated to YouTube often left their only surviving copies of early work on Dailymotion.
• Offline viewing of licensed or public-domain material — archival footage, government video, and out-of-copyright film are unusually well represented.
• Media monitoring. European broadcasters push clips here, and communications teams frequently need to keep the segment that mentioned them.
• Education. Language teachers in particular use Dailymotion's French-language catalogue and need offline copies for classrooms with poor connectivity.

Regional Rights Are the Catch

Dailymotion's catalogue is heavily geo-licensed. A music video or sports highlight available in France may be blocked in the United States, not because the platform is inconsistent but because the licence is territorial. If a video will not resolve, geo-restriction is one of the more likely reasons, and it is a rights boundary rather than a technical fault. Similarly, a lot of what circulates on Dailymotion is re-uploaded broadcast content that the uploader had no right to post; the presence of a full film or TV episode on the platform is a sign of infringement, not of a permissive licence.

Live streams cannot be captured mid-broadcast; wait for the replay to publish.
