Tumblr Media Is Scattered Across Reblogs

Tumblr's defining mechanic is the reblog chain: one original post copied, annotated and re-hosted across thousands of blogs. That makes finding the source of any given GIF or video unusually hard, and it makes archiving your own work unusually important, because your original post is one deletion away from surviving only as an uncredited reblog.

This tool resolves a public Tumblr post URL to its media — MP4 for native video, GIF or WebP for animated posts, and full-resolution JPEG or PNG for photo posts. Tumblr stores several sizes of every image and the tool requests the largest one it publishes.

Post Types

• Photo posts — single images or photosets with multiple images in one post.
• GIF posts — Tumblr's native currency. Note that Tumblr caps GIF uploads (historically 10 MB, later relaxed), so a saved GIF may be a compressed version of the creator's original.
• Video posts — native uploads served as MP4, capped at a few minutes.
• Audio posts — legacy format, sometimes still resolvable.
• Embedded YouTube, Vimeo or Spotify — not Tumblr-hosted; use the tool for the actual host.

Getting the URL

Use the post's permalink — blogname.tumblr.com/post/123456789/slug or the newer tumblr.com/blogname/123456789 form. Both work. Copy from the timestamp link on the post rather than the dashboard, since dashboard URLs are session-specific. If you are looking at a reblog, click through to the original post where you can; the source blog's copy is usually the highest quality version in the chain.

Why People Archive Tumblr

• 2018 taught a lesson. The adult-content purge removed enormous volumes of posts overnight, including a great deal of misclassified art and photography. Anyone with a decade of work on the platform learned that hosting is not archiving.
• Artists and gif-makers keeping masters of work that exists nowhere else, particularly fandom art and edits made directly on the platform.
• Writers and researchers studying fandom, subculture and internet history, where Tumblr is a primary source and link rot is severe.
• Blog migration — moving a body of work to a personal site or another platform requires the files, not the links.

Attribution Culture

Tumblr's norms around credit are stronger than its legal enforcement. Reposting a gifset without crediting the maker, or lifting art from a reblog to use elsewhere, is treated as a serious breach by the community even where the copyright question is murky. If you save someone else's work, keep the source link with it, ask before republishing, and never strip a watermark or signature. Most Tumblr creators say yes when asked and are furious when they are not.
